The classic red skinned shallot. French Shallots are smaller and more flavourful than onions, and arguably easier to grow. Set aside some bulbs at harvest time, and try planting them at the same time as garlic in the fall. They will reliably over winter with a head start in the spring, to be harvested like green onions or left to produce 3 or 4 new bulbs in late summer.
