Sylvetta Arugula

Description

(Diplotaxis spp) AKA Wild Arugula.  When we grew cold hardy greens in a greenhouse for the first time in 2003, we included sylvetta arugula in the trial and promptly fell in love with the intense arugula flavour and perennial nature of this salad green.  It’s taken us a few years to finally build up the patch in our unheated greenhouse, which is where we find it really shines.  Able to grow amply in the shoulder seasons, when flea beetles aren’t around, it forms a small shrub and readily self seeds from its near continuous (and edible) blooms.  Native to the Mediterranean region, Sylvetta is documented to have been harvested since prehistoric times.  We find that outdoors in our climate it doesn’t always overwinter and suffers more from the flea beetles, but can still be sown and harvested just like proper arugula.
